Sliding from summer into fall

September is perhaps the sweetest month at the market. Summer produce is still coming in, and lettuces that suffered in the heat and drought are freshening up as evenings get cooler. Now the market brims with apples, squashes and plump pumpkins. Early apples

Apples already! Boxes of early Macs and Galas at the market last week took us by surprise. This year’s growing season, fueled by abundant sunshine, is on fast forward. Some crops you’d expect to see in late summer or early fall are turning up sooner than usual. Other summer produce – peaches, blueberries and juicy, tender corn – may not be around too much longer.
